This famous handicap has grown in status since three-year-olds were banned from running in the Ebor Handicap in 2019, and it frequently attracts the best stayers of the crop beneath Classic standard. Our contender, Tierra del Toro, is stepping up in distance from 12f, and has been crying out both for softer ground and a flatter track, having made a decent fist of unsuitable conditions when fourth at the Qatar Goodwood Festival. He began his year running a very promising third in the London Gold Cup, behind our Royal Ascot winner Lost Boys. York on rain-softened ground will suit him.
