A new Group 1 race, elevated to the elite level last year. It’s run over the intermediate distance of 7f – neither sprint nor mile – and will suit many a short-running miler or amenable sprinter. Our three contenders include two mudlarks. There’s Native Warrior, who Karl Burke has trained to win two major end-of-season, deep field handicaps at Ascot, both over 7f; he went to Ireland and won a soft-ground G3 last time, taking his form to a new level. That was over this distance, too. He’s never quite looked like a G1 winner in waiting, but he deserves this crack at the top prize. Paborus also thrives when he can silk his toe in. The winner of five of his eight starts, he returned from 364 days off to pick up a 6f Group 3 on the all-weather in June. This distance will suit him even better, and he’s the pick of our three by James Doyle. Our third contender is lovable roan mare Flora Of Bermuda, who has been close up in numerous G1 sprints against colts in the past two seasons. This season, she has won three or her four races – only being found out when last at Royal Ascot in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes. There is a possibility she is not quite the force of old, but this 7f plays to her strengths. Don’t rule her out.
